Steven M. Hammerman, NBCT – AYA Social Studies 6-12
Mr. Hammerman currently in his 10th year of teaching and in his 9th year here at Falcon Cove Middle School. Teaching both 6th and 8th grade at Falcon has allowed him to experience the different developmental stages of the middle school student. In 2007 he earned his National Board Teaching Certification in Adolescence and Young Adulthood, specializing in Social Studies – History. In May, 2010 he was chosen by his departmental peers, the Falcon Cove Social Studies Teacher of the Year. In June of 2010, he was awarded, with great pride and appreciation, the title of Florida Council of Social Studies – 2010 Broward County Schools Middle School Social Studies Teacher of the Year. Then, in March of 2011, chosen by the Falcon Cove staff and faculty, was name 2011 school wide Teacher of the Year.
In 2010, Mr. Hammerman was asked to join the executive board of the Broward County Council on the Social Studies (BCCSS). In his role as BCCSS Middle School Representative, he is currently working on helping Broward SS teachers prepare for the upcoming changes/challenges in the field of social studies. Working with teachers from across the curriculum, he is doing his part in helping to keep Broward SS teachers on the forefront of today and tomorrows Social Studies education.
In his years at Falcon Cove, Mr. Hammerman has kept active in the educational community. Here is short list of recent participation:
• 2003 – 2008: Assistant Coach Falcon Girls and Boys Softball (*2008 Broward County Boys Softball Champions)
• 2003 – 2009: Falcon Cove Supervision Team
• 2006 – Current: Falcon Field Events and Track Coach
• 2008 – Current: Faculty Council elected member
• 2009 – Current: Junior Achievement Program Coordinator
• 2010 – Current: Trip Coordinator/Leader – The Falcon Cove D.C. Experience
• 2010 Faculty Professional Development Committee
• 2011 Seven Year War College Scholarship Winner, Ticonderoga, NY
• 2011 Broward County Social Studies Textbook Adaption Committee
• 2011 Academic Games Social Studies Coordinator
His teaching motto is simple, history has relevance! To comprehend history is to understand how our existence today has come to be, economically, politically, and socially. As for giving the best he can to his students, he is a true believer in continuing education for himself. Since his graduation from FAU in 2001, professional development and continuing education has been a mainstay of him furthering his dedication to his students.
